What do I Need to Rent a Car in Iceland?

Renting a car in Iceland is the ultimate way to explore this wild and wonderful island at your own pace. Whether you're chasing waterfalls, cruising the Golden Circle, or tackling the rugged highlands, having your own wheels gives you the freedom to experience it all. But before you hit the road, there are a few essentials you’ll need to know. From the right documents to insurance tips, here’s everything you need to make renting a car in Iceland as smooth as the Ring Road itself!

Driver’s License

As with any country, you must have a valid license to drive in Iceland. You don’t need an international driving license, a valid license issued in your country of residence is enough to rent a car here. However, you must make sure your license has full privileges - in other words, you can’t use a provisional license or driving permit.

If you do have an international license, it’ll only be valid if you have a full driving license issued in your home country, so make sure to bring both. New drivers must note that you must have your license for at least a year prior to renting a car in Iceland, if not, you’ll have to let someone else in your party drive. Finally, all documents must be in English or have English translations.

Credit Card

You will need a credit card to rent a car in Iceland. Typically, car rental companies in Iceland do not ask for a deposit. However, they will need to see a valid credit card on arrival. Similarly, the type of car insurance required varies across companies.

When renting a car with GO Iceland, you will need a credit card for your booking and to hold the reservation. If you haven’t chosen the premium insurance package or SCDW (Super collision damage waiver), we will block a deposit for 350.000 ISK which will be released when the car has been returned.

Age Requirements

The minimum age for renting a car in Iceland varies across rental car companies. Typically, this is between 21 to 23 years depending on whether you’re renting a regular car or a 4x4. With GO Iceland, you only need to be 18 years of age and have had your license for a year to rent a car.

Choosing the Right Car for Your Visit

The variety of terrains in Iceland means your vehicle choice matters. For trips centered around Reykjavík or accessible routes like the Golden Circle and Ring Road, any car will do. But if your plans include the Highlands, a 4x4 is required to tackle the challenging F-Roads.

If you’re unsure what type of car would be best for your itinerary, we’ve covered all the information you need in our previous blog.
