Your Guide to the Best Campervan Rentals in Iceland

The rugged landscapes of Iceland are simply unforgettable — and exploring them in a campervan will lend an experience like no other. The question is, which campervan rental makes sense for

you
? Do you need a 4-wheel drive? What makes and models work best? This guide covers the best campervan rentals in Iceland so you can choose the perfect vehicle for your needs.

9 Best Options for Campervan Rentals

Truth be told, there’s no such thing as the “best” overall campervan rental for Iceland. Only a model that makes sense for you and your traveling party.

But to help you make an informed decision, here are some tips and suggestions for narrowing down the perfect model.

Best Iceland Campervan Rentals for Solo Travelers

If you’re headed to Iceland on a solo trip, you’ll likely be comfortable in a smaller, more compact campervan.

Options may include:

  1. Renault Kangoo Camper: This cozy little vehicle offers plenty of space for solo travelers and their gear. Keep in mind it’s a front-wheel drive, so it’s not rated for Iceland’s rugged F-roads.
  2. Suzuki Jimny 4x4 (2026): This 4x4 vehicle takes gasoline instead of diesel. It’s the same size as the Kangoo Camper, but you’ll be able to stray a little further off the beaten path.
  3. Jeep Renagade 4xe: The ultimate adventure camper. This is a 4WD that comes with an automatic transmission and is legal for Highland travel. It also features a roof-top tent. The camper technically fits five people, which makes it perfectly comfortable for the solo traveler who packs heavy.

Best Iceland Campervan Rentals for Couples

Whether you’re on a romantic getaway or want some quality time with a friend, a two-person campervan offers everything you need for a fun, relaxing, intimate Iceland experience.

You may consider campervan models like:

  1. Fiat Doblo Maxi: A manual campervan designed for two people. Perfect for city camping, as it’s not rated for F-road travel. Keep in mind there’s an automatic model, the Fiat Doblo Maxi Automatic, for travelers unfamiliar with manual transmissions.
  2. Renault Trafic 3: This camper offers the same FWD experience as the Doblo, but with quite a bit of extra space. Also, like the Doblo Maxi, there is an automatic model available.
  3. VW California Beach 4x4: This 4WD is legal on F-roads and ready to take on any adventure. It’s also the largest model in this category — it seats five people comfortably.

Best Iceland Campervan Rentals for Groups and Families

Taking the family on an unforgettable vacation? Marking a momentous occasion with a big crew? Whatever the reason for your Icelandic adventure, these campervan rentals offer everything you need.

Check out:

  1. Crosscamp Flex: This four-person campervan is a front-wheel drive perfectly suited for city driving. Also a great rental for exploring the Golden Circle, as you won’t need to traverse any F-roads.
  2. Toyota Hilux 4x4 Camper: One of our most comfortable campervan models! Explore the highlands in this automatic 4WD without sacrificing the comforts of home.
  3. VW California 4x4: Like the Hilux, this five-seat campervan comes with a 4-wheel drive to take on the rugged Highlands. A perfect option for those wanting a more ‘three-room concept’ while camping.

Picking the Best Campervan Rental in Iceland

Stuck between two or more campervans for your trip? Here are some suggestions for whittling down your shortlist:

  • Number of people traveling. Traveling by yourself? A two-person campervan may be all you need. Taking the whole family? A larger vehicle might offer more space. Keep in mind that packing plays a role in this as well. If you’re bringing many items or if you’re planning on moving to various accommodations, a larger campervan might make more sense.
  • Road type. If you’re planning on driving along Iceland’s famous F-roads, you’ll need a 4x4 campervan. Most AWDs work well on gravel or sightseeing roads. And if you plan on sticking near Reykjavík, an FWD will be fine.
  • Climbing the Highlands. Just because a vehicle performs well on rough roads doesn’t mean it’s compatible with mountain driving. And if you plan on taking any F-roads, remember: 4-wheel drives are required by law.
  • Manual or automatic. If you can drive a manual transmission, you’ll likely have more makes and models available to choose from. But if you’re more comfortable with automatics, good news: many of them are rated for mountain drives. Just be sure to check with your rental provider in advance — they may go out of stock more quickly during peak tourist season.

Wait! What to Know Before You Rent a Campervan in Iceland

For one thing, you’ll need to think about rental insurance. GO Iceland includes a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) with your campervan rental, which covers any third-party and personal accidents you may encounter.

But if you’re headed to the Highlands, or expect to stay in the big city, you may want to think about:

  • Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW)
  • Theft Protection
  • Gravel Protection (GP)
  • Sand and Ash Protection (SAAP)

You’ll also need to think about any extras you’ll need on the road. If you’re camping multiple nights, for example, you may want to consider renting GPS units and/or a WiFi router. These ensure you always have a way to contact family, friends, and emergency help. Plus, you can easily get back on track if you ever get lost.
